What are the best locations in Big Sur for proposals?

Let me be honest. These are some great spots to get you thinking and excited! But for a more detailed Google Drive with 10 years of curated locations click here and inquire!

SO what are some legit locations!? Here are 5 amazing locations for proposals in Big Sur and Carmel-by-the-Sea.

Garrapata Beach

Garrapata Beach is what most people dream of when they think of a California beach—except it’s even better. Growing up in California, I’ve seen my fair share of beaches, and Garrapata remains one of my absolute favorites.

This beach is huge, which means you’ll have plenty of room for privacy. The versatility of this spot is unmatched—you’ve got the expansive sandy beach, nearby cliffs for dramatic views, and even Calla Lily Valley, which is in bloom from April to June (weather permitting). If you’re looking for photos filled with breathtaking scenery, this is your place.

Sunsets here are truly world-class. But here’s the catch: winter waves can occasionally take over the beach, so timing and planning are key. It’s about a 10-minute walk from the highway to the sand, but the journey is worth it. Reach out to me for insider tips to make your Garrapata Beach proposal perfect.

2. Pfeiffer Beach: Ultra-Romantic and Iconic

Pmfeiffer Beach is a dream location for a proposal. Nestled further south in Big Sur, this spot is famous for its Keyhole Arch—a natural rock formation with a hole that catches the light beautifully, especially at sunset.

Keep in mind that Pfeiffer Beach is a bit of a hidden gem. The road down is bumpy, parking is limited, and there’s no cell service. But with some planning (and maybe a little help from me), this location is worth the effort. In the winter, the road can wash out, so be sure to double-check accessibility.

A few things to consider: Pfeiffer Beach can be chilly and windy, even in summer, so bring jackets and blankets to stay cozy. It can also get busy during peak season, but its size allows you to carve out your own intimate space. When you catch the sunset here, it’s pure magic.

Check out the map below and know that turning off HWY 1 can come quickly to get this road so be ready for that!

3. Carmel Beach: Iconic Beauty with a Dash of Charm

Carmel Beach might just be my personal favorite for proposals in the Big Sur-Carmel area. It’s stunning, with its famous white sand and sweeping ocean views. Plus, it’s just steps away from downtown Carmel-by-the-Sea, where you can celebrate afterward with dinner or drinks at one of the many charming restaurants.

For the best spot, head a bit further north on the beach—I have a pin-drop-ready location in mind that’s ideal for a proposal. While Carmel Beach is popular, especially near the entrances, moving further along the sand will give you more privacy. One thing to keep in mind: dogs are allowed on the beach, so expect to see a few happy pups.

4. Soberanes Point: A Cliffside Dream

Soberanes Point, technically part of Garrapata State Park, is another showstopper. Perched atop a small hill, this location offers 360-degree views of Big Sur that will take your breath away. It’s only about a five-minute hike up, but the incline is steep—wear comfortable shoes.

Soberanes Point is particularly magical at sunset. There’s a rocky platform that feels like it was made for proposals. While it’s a popular spot, the sheer grandeur of the views makes it feel intimate and romantic. If you’re seeking something even more secluded, I have other cliffside recommendations that I keep under wraps for my clients.

One thing to note: It can get windy up here, so dress warmly and plan accordingly.

5. Garrapata State Park Cliffs: The Classic Big Sur Look

If you’re envisioning the classic Big Sur scenery—rugged cliffs plunging into the ocean—then the cliffs within Garrapata State Park are for you. This area is vast, with countless outlooks and crevices that feel like your own private paradise. Even though it’s a well-loved state park, you’ll be surprised at how easy it is to find a secluded spot.

The park is easily accessible from the highway, but navigating it can be tricky without insider knowledge. That’s where I come in—I can guide you to the perfect location for your proposal. The cliffs are ideal for couples looking to capture that dramatic, windswept, edge-of-the-world vibe in their photos.
